Friday Finishes - What Binding Style Best Fits Your Quilt. . .

You've made your binding fabric choice for your quilt as discussed previously.  Now  it's time to determine what binding style best fits your quilt.

Do you need a scalloped binding, or. . .

a wide/decorative binding, or. . .

a narrow binding for a quilt show submission, or. . .

a traditional binding:  machine sewn to the front, hand sewn to the back, or. . .

a machine sewn to the front decorative stitched binding, or. . .

a stitch-in-the-ditch sewn to the front binding, or. . .

an art quilt do-what-you-want binding?


Determining what binding style you want can be based on more than just looks and ease of attaching.  Did you know that some binding types can help resolve a border distortion?  Or that if submitting for a judged show your binding should be full with corners mitered?  Selecting the binding style that works best for your quilt then determines the binding strip sizes, the best way to attach the binding, the thread color needed, and the presser foot required.  


I will discuss each binding type, it's pros and cons, as I continue with this subject.  Stay with me.  We will eventually get to how to sew the binding on.  I promise. :)
